Ambulatory Blood Monitoring

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is a non-invasive diagnostic test that measures blood pressure continuously over 24 hours while you go about your normal daily activities and sleep. It provides a more accurate picture of blood pressure patterns than a single reading taken in a clinic.

Why Is ABPM Done?

ABPM is recommended to:

  • Diagnose hypertension (high blood pressure)

  • Detect white-coat hypertension

  • Identify masked hypertension

  • Evaluate blood pressure during sleep (night-time BP)

  • Monitor effectiveness of blood pressure medications

How Is ABPM Performed?

  1. A blood pressure cuff is placed on the upper arm

  2. The cuff is connected to a small portable monitor

  3. Blood pressure is recorded automatically at regular intervals

  4. The patient continues normal daily activities and sleep

Monitoring usually lasts 24 hours.

Benefits of ABPM

  • More accurate than clinic BP readings

  • Detects day–night blood pressure variations

  • Helps prevent over- or under-treatment

  • Improves diagnosis and treatment planning

  • Non-invasive and safe
